Navy Nurse Corps Enhance Clinical Sustainment Skills In Joint Environment
The Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) program is an undergraduate officer training program for the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps.
Naval Reserve unit pilots in September 1924 at St. John was founded in Annapolis, Maryland. It allowed the Navy to test the concept before sending its regular units. In 1926, the US Department of the Navy created the Naval Reserve Training Corps. Its purpose was to provide a reserve of qualified officers needed for the rapid expansion of the army in the event of an emergency. The second goal was to familiarize faculty and students with the Navy and its national importance. Sixty freshmen reservists have been accepted into each of the original units at the University of California, Berkeley, Northwestern University, the University of Washington, Harvard University, Yale University, and Georgia Institute of Technology. UCLA’s NROTC unit was led by Captain Chester W. Nimitz. Freshmen at NROTC received one uniform and (in their junior and senior years) a living allowance totaling $210. They had the option of participating in a five-day training cruise each summer, for which they were charged 70 cents a day and a transportation allowance between the university and the ports of embarkation and loading.

Under the US Navy’s ROTC system, graduates become active duty officers, rather than reserve officers, and are required to serve 5 years for the Navy option and 4 years for the Navy and nurse options. The Naval Reserve Training Corps recruits personnel into the United States Navy as a midshipman or the United States Navy as a second lieutenant. While in college, these future officers are known as Midshipm. While the Naval Academy midshipmen are on active duty, the NROTC midshipmen are in the Navy Reserve but are on active duty for training periods during the summer. Each military service is authorized by law to award scholarships to 5,500 officers or cadets at one time. The US Navy maintains about 6,000 midshipmen at any given time, and the rest compete for scholarships.
Most NROTC Midshipm join the program immediately after graduating from high school. They are Midshipm or Scholarship or Midshipm University Program.
Midshipmen Scholarships are for those who are applying to the Navy for an ROTC program (during their freshman year of high school, or during their junior college years). Some NROTC students enlist in the Navy or Marine Corps as m or wom. The highly selective application process includes a detailed written application and an interview with a Navy representative. Applicants must also undergo a trance medical screening process. The Navy pays Midshipm scholarship tuition, training fees (i.e. lab fees), plus book money. All Marines fall under one of three categories: a Navy option, a Navy nurse’s option, or a Navy option. The Navy does not pay for room and board. However, some schools will offer scholarships to cover at least part of the room and board. In addition to tuition, the Navy provides a monthly stipend during the school year. As of 2020, it was $250 per month for first-year masters, and increased by $50 each year thereafter (i.e. $300 per month for sophomores, etc.).

The College Midshipm Program is for those who join the Naval ROTC without a scholarship. They complete all activities and scholarship requirements and, if they continue in the four-year program, will also be commissioned as a lieutenant or second lieutenant. If they do well academically and in the ROTC program, they are often awarded a scholarship from the Navy. Due to the technical nature of the Navy, college students who do not have a 4-year scholarship and who plan to major in a technical field, such as engineering, science, or math, are more competitive for scholarships.
NROTC classifies all college graduates into a 3-tier system, with Advanced Generation majors in the Tier-1 category, most other majors in the Tier-2 category, and graduates with easy degree completion requirements in the Tier-3 category. Level 1 and Level 2 applicants are more competitive for scholarships than Level 3 applicants. Marines participate in ROTC through the Marine Corps Commissioned Education Program (MECEP) and are referred to by the name of their rank or program, “MECEP”. (pronounced mee-sep) MECEP Marines are not paid by the Navy and actually use the Montgomery GI Bill or Post-9/11 GI Bill to pay for school. They continue to be paid according to their ranks, however, each race is counted while they are in school and they will be disqualified if they do not come out of the commission program.

Most college NROTC modules are only a part-time commitment during a course of study at a college or university. In a typical week, ROTC students have three basic parts:
One or in some cases two days of the week are designated as uniform days, with several hours of military training in between, such as inspections, close-up drills, and drills (by officers attached to an NROTC unit or visiting instructors). ).
