How To Become A Certified Massage Therapist – How to Become a Traveling Massage Therapist Guide – Travel the World and Make Money as a Massage Therapist

I know we all dream of traveling. But behind these dreams also lies fear. “What if I don’t want to go back to my so-called home?” “What if I don’t have any money?” “What if I end up leaving everything behind and come home with nothing?”. These thoughts are like monsters chasing dreams. It can lead to anxiety and fear that can get you nowhere.

I have these monsters too, especially when I started blogging. I’m not here to tell you to pack your bags and leave. No way to tell haha. We need financial stability, we all do. So what I’m here to tell you is that you can make money while traveling – and one way to do that is to become a traveling massage therapist. We’ve been there, done that. In this post I will tell you about our journey to becoming a massage therapist and how you can become one too ♡

Prior to long term travel, I worked in the quality assurance department of a dental company in Kuwait, then moved to Iraqi Kurdistan for a career change and worked in the security department of an oil company. Somehow my life still feels incomplete. No matter how well I performed in my career, I would never feel satisfied, any level of success was never good enough. When I realized that, it made sense to me – I would be doing something I truly love, which is travel.

At first I was living off my savings, but I realized I needed to make money while I was there. Money goes by so fast, I don’t even notice how much I spend in a day, especially when I’m having so much fun. Anyway, while traveling in Laos, I met Jonathan. We became a couple and started traveling together. From then on we were inseparable. BTW he is my husband now :p

A massage therapist is a person who is trained and licensed in massage therapy. Massage is a complex practice that requires training to obtain a license.

We were living in Vietnam at the time and our plans at the time were to go to India to study and become certified yoga teachers. I really wanted to learn how to give personal massages until we met traveling hippies who made enough money just from massages.

While we were in India, we learned about Ayurveda – an authentic Indian healing practice. It was completely different and sounded more exotic than any other Asian massage and we really loved it! That’s when we finally decided to go to Rishikesh to study to become certified massage therapists. We each paid $200 for the week-long intensive course. It’s a good experience. The training was extensive, but we got to practice with real customers to perfect the craft.

Ask yourself what kind of massage you want to give yourself, and go from there. There are different types of massage, and I suggest you specialize in one or two so you can market it as your “specialty.” This includes Ayurvedic, Thai, Swedish, hot stone therapy, deep tissue therapy, aromatherapy, reflexology, hot stone therapy and acupressure.

If you have plenty of time and extra money to buy a flight, I recommend going to India to get certified like we did, or maybe to Thailand where it’s cheaper and more authentic. Obtaining certification in Western countries can be expensive.

For Filipinos who can’t afford it, don’t worry! TESDA offers free NCII massage therapy classes. The best part is that it can be done online and you can study at your own pace and time. All you need to do is create a TESDA account to access all free courses. (I love that TESDA offers opportunities like this!!)

Getting customers can be difficult at first. As with any business, you need to market yourself well. Gaining trust and a good reputation with your clients takes time, as not everyone will be satisfied with your service, but once you earn trust and a good reputation, your hard work will definitely pay off! Here are some ways to sell your services 🙂

When we did this in Peru, we charged $40-$50 per client and averaged 2-3 clients per day. It really depends on where you are. In some Asian countries like Thailand and Vietnam, I really don’t think it’s a good career because spas and locals offer prices as low as $4. How can you compete with that? But in the UK I heard they even charge a minimum of $150! So this can be a very good source of income depending on your location.

Yes! But I recommend you only do this on the sides. You must have other sources of income. Sure, you can make a lot of money, but there will be days (even weeks) when you have no customers at all.

In our case, we were also selling coconut oil and learning English. We also started making money from our new website.

A friendly reminder, depending on your location, you may need a work visa if you plan to work abroad. You can’t do this in the United States, Europe, Australia, or Canada without insurance and a work visa. Western countries have strict requirements because they consider it a controlled profession. Of course you can get away with some clients when you are on a tourist visa, but I would advise you not to risk having your visa revoked if you are caught doing it illegally. We have never done it there!

I know you can work with a local hotel or yoga studio to help you with your business visa, and maybe you can just organize or work with a yoga teacher who organizes retreats where you can provide your services. There are several ways, but make sure you don’t get in trouble doing so!

That’s what this post is all about! Hope this helps you on your backpacking trip, wherever you are. Remember, being a massage therapist is a noble profession. There are many different massage therapy specialties, and each therapy always has a different clientele. Unemployment in this field is low, currently at 1.5%. This means that if you’re just starting out looking for a career in the field, there are still some openings, but most licensed massage therapists have jobs.
